Service in the Mountain Area of Narcotics Anonymous

Giving back what was so freely given to us

Purpose of the Mountain Area Service Committee

In keeping with the First Concept of Service, the purpose of the Mountain Area Service Committee shall be to respond to the needs and collective conscience of its member groups and create a structure which develops, coordinates, and maintains services on behalf of NA as a whole.

Functions of the Mountain Area Service Committee

  • To unify the groups within its area, to whom it is ultimately responsible;
  • To support individual groups by providing services and pooling resources;
  • To carry the message of recovery through its various subcommittees; and
  • To contribute to the growth of Narcotics Anonymous and enhance the quality of Narcotics Anonymous as a whole, by supporting the Volunteer Region Service Committee.

The Mountain Area Service Committee (MASC) usually meets at 3:00 pm on the third Sunday of each month at various groups throughout the Mountain Area of Narcotics Anonymous (MANA).  See the Area Events Calendar for the date and location of the next MASC meeting.  Feel free to contact the Administrative Committee with any questions or concerns with MANA business.

Why Should I Get Involved?

If you are like most of us, you will find that NA service through Area Service involvement is often a challenging yet rewarding experience. As a participating member of an Area Service Committee, you will be directly involved in developing, coordinating and maintaining the services Narcotics Anonymous offers in the Mountain Area and worldwide.

At these meetings, the ASC committee and subcommittee members and Group Service Representatives (GSRs) join together in service to develop, coordinate, and maintain the services of Narcotics Anonymous in this area.

Our fellowship’s service boards and committees exist to help groups share their experience with one another, provide tools which help groups function better, attract new members to group recovery meetings, and carry the NA message further than any single group could carry it alone. We may recall what we could not do alone; we can do together!

When we decide to serve NA, we make a decision to help ourselves and other addicts find and maintain recovery. We believe that NA Service is a critical element of our recovery. Our primary goal through NA Service is to successfully carry the message of recovery to the addict who still suffers.

The primary purpose of the ASC is to support and serve the individual autonomous NA groups, group activities, and common group needs. The final responsibility and authority for ASC activity rests with these autonomous NA groups; because the groups have created the service structure, they have the final authority over all its affairs. Therefore, it is extremely important that area groups take an active role in the ASC.

How Do I Get Involved?

It is suggested to talk with your sponsor before taking on any service commitment, but there is always work to be done and positions that need filling. Check with your GSR regarding any open service positions and perhaps your home group will submit a nomination to MASC indicating your willingness to serve. If you are nominated for a MASC position, you will need to be present at the MASC meeting when you are nominated, and you will need to provide a list of qualifications along with previous NA service history.

For more information regarding MASC positions, please contact the Administrative Committee.

MASC Administrative Committee

The Administrative Committee is responsible for administering the general affairs of the entire area. Because of that, it’s important that great care be taken in the selection of these trusted servants. A substantial amount of clean time and personal maturity should be the first consideration, along with experience in the steps, traditions, and concepts of service. Our trusted servants should demonstrate the stability and personal sense of direction that serve as an example to others. They should be capable of serving without attempting to govern.

Having a significant area service background often makes more effective administrative officers. Experience as both a group service representative and as an area subcommittee chairperson will prove invaluable.

The Administrative Committee is comprised of following service positions:

  • Chairperson
  • Vice-Chairperson
  • Secretary
  • Assistant Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Assistant Treasurer
  • Regional Committee Member
  • Alternate Regional Committee Member

For more information on this committee’s service positions and responsibilities, please see the MASC Policy.
